Best synthesis EVAR!
Over at BRSMblog theres a good post on the best synthesis ever. Its a discussion I've had around Baran Lab before, and I figured since total synthesis is our jam, people might have something to contribute to his comment section. I already gave him my 3 cents off the top of my head (Heathcock’s daphniphylline work, Corey-Altom synthesis of aspidophytine (this is probably my favorite), Overman’s work on actinophyllic acid). I'm sure I could think of a few others, but I need to run a column.
Happy Tuesday!

Guest Post: A Philosophical Consideration Of Total Synthesis
This post comes from outside the Baran lab. A very talented undergraduate (Wade Miller) from the University of Pennsylvania sent us his paper from an assignment in philosophy class regarding the relevance of total synthesis in the modern era....

Electrochemical Synthesis Of Dixiamycins
Phil Baran upon learning about electrochemistry UPDATE: Our paper was highlighted on Deadspin! UPDATE 2: Support from the San Diego Chargers! Our paper on the total synthesis of dixiamycin B is now live in the JACS ASAP section, which means it's my...

Reflecting On Yield, And The Need For A Qualitative Assessment Of Reactions
Here's some thoughts: 1. I categorize all reaction yields qualitatively. What does this mean? Generally speaking, I don't really believe in yields other than 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, or quantitative. I also sometimes break this down as 1.)...

Ingenol: Behind The Scenes
Disappointment, frustration, excitement, setbacks, thrill, and success. It has been a roller-coaster ride, but finally the reward is here. A total synthesis of ingenol from our lab was published online today. The chemistry is all described in the paper,...

Woe-be-gone
We'll start things off with our lab's recent synthesis of ouabagenin. We'll skip the biological relevance of the molecule for the purpose of this blog and go straight to the actual synthesis. Read more »...
